چکیده

The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) nadir sensor and algorithms for the United States National Polarorbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) comprise a system to map ozone total column globally in 24 hours and to measure the altitude distribution of ozone in the upper stratosphere (30-50 km). The sensor consists of a wide field (110 degree) telescope and two spectrometers: an imager covering 300 to 380 nm with a 50 km nadir footprint for mapping total column ozone across a 2800 km swath, and a 250 to 310 nm spectrometer with a single 250 km footprint to provide ozone profile data with SBUV/2 heritage. Both spectrometers provide 1 nm resolution (fullwidth at half-maximum, FWHM) spectra. The sensitivity of the OMPS total column algorithm to sensor random and systematic errors is analyzed, and a preliminary evaluation of the potential for deriving concentrations of other trace gases from the calibrated spectral radiances is provided.

Postlaunch performance of the Suomi National Polarorbiting Partnership Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) nadir sensors

The prelaunch specifications for nadir sensors of the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) were designed to ensure that measurements from them could be used to retrieve total column ozone and nadir ozone profile information both for operational use and for use in long-term ozone data records. In this paper, we will show results from our extensive analysis of the performance of the nadir mapp...

First results from a rotational Raman scattering cloud algorithm applied to the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper

This paper reports initial results from an Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper cloud pressure and cloud fraction algorithm. The OMPS cloud products are intended for use in OMPS ozone or other tracegas algorithms. We developed the OMPS cloud products using a heritage algorithm developed for the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite. The cloud pressure algori...

Measuring the Antarctic ozone hole with the new Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS)

The new Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS), which launched on the Suomi National Polarorbiting Partnership satellite in October 2011, gives a detailed view of the development of the Antarctic ozone hole and extends the long series of satellite ozone measurements that go back to the early 1970s. OMPS includes two modules – nadir and limb – to measure profile and total ozone concentrations. ...

Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (SAO OMPS) formaldehyde retrieval

This paper presents our new formaldehyde (H2CO) retrievals, obtained from spectra recorded by the nadir instrument of the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) flown on board NASA’s Suomi National Polarorbiting Partnership (SUOMI-NPP) satellite. Our algorithm is similar to the one currently in place for the production of NASA’s Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) operational H2CO product. We ar...

Advancing measurements of tropospheric NO2 from space: New algorithm and first global results from OMPS

We present a new algorithm based on the iterative spectral fitting technique for direct retrieval of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) vertical columns from hyperspectral satellite measurements, and a new spatial technique for separating the stratospheric and tropospheric contributions to the total NO2 vertical columns. This direct vertical column fitting (DVCF) algorithm allows more complete treatment of...
